How to Make Thanksgiving Dinner on a Budget

One of my favorite ways to save money on groceries is to plan meals around ingredients that can be used in multiple recipes.

And Thanksgiving dinner is no different!

Instead of buying a bunch of specialty ingredients that you’ll only use once, I built this Thanksgiving menu around affordable Aldi staples.

For example:

  • Chicken broth is used in the turkey gravy, mashed potatoes, stuffing, and carrots.
  • Evaporated milk helps make the mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole, and mac and cheese creamy.
  • Poultry seasoning adds flavor to several dishes without needing to purchase a bunch of individual spices.
  • Onions, celery, and carrots are used throughout the meal, helping reduce food waste.

By choosing recipes that share ingredients, you can stretch your grocery budget while still making a holiday meal that feels special.

Your Complete Aldi Thanksgiving Grocery List

I’ve already done the grocery planning for you!

My free Thanksgiving guide includes an organized Aldi grocery list covering everything from your turkey and fresh produce to pantry staples and dessert ingredients.

You’ll find affordable ingredients like:

  • A whole frozen turkey
  • Russet potatoes and sweet potatoes
  • Fresh carrots, celery, and onions
  • Green beans and cream of mushroom soup
  • Stuffing mix
  • Shells and cheese
  • Cranberries
  • Hawaiian sweet rolls
  • Pumpkin pie ingredients

Money-saving tip: Before heading to Aldi, take a few minutes to check your pantry, refrigerator, and freezer. You might already have ingredients like butter, sugar, seasonings, or broth!

The fewer ingredients you have to purchase, the more money you’ll keep in your pocket.

A Stress-Free Thanksgiving Cooking Schedule

Let’s talk about one of the most overwhelming parts of Thanksgiving: figuring out how to cook everything and have it ready at the same time!

That’s why I included a complete Thanksgiving cooking game plan in my free guide.

It walks you through:

  • 2–3 days before Thanksgiving: When to start thawing your turkey and preparing your kitchen.
  • The day before Thanksgiving: Which dishes you can prepare ahead of time to make Thanksgiving morning easier.
  • Thanksgiving morning: A step-by-step cooking timeline for your turkey and side dishes.
  • Right before dinner: How to finish everything and get your meal on the table.

No more guessing which dish needs to go into the oven next!

Tips for Making Your Thanksgiving Dinner Even More Affordable

Here are a few of my favorite ways to save even more money this Thanksgiving.

1. Shop your pantry first. Before buying anything, check what you already have. Basic ingredients can make a big difference in your final grocery total.

2. Stick to your grocery list. Aldi has plenty of tempting seasonal items, but those extras can quickly push your budget higher.

3. Use ingredients across multiple dishes. This is one of the easiest ways to reduce grocery costs and avoid wasting food.

4. Prepare dishes ahead of time. Making your cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie the day before saves time and helps Thanksgiving Day run more smoothly.

5. Don’t worry about making everything from scratch. Store-bought stuffing mix, shells and cheese, and a premade pie crust are all perfectly fine shortcuts. A delicious holiday meal doesn’t have to mean spending all day in the kitchen.
